A Call to SEND Leads and Head Teachers: Let’s Rethink Alternative Provision

A Call to SEND Leads and Head Teachers: Let’s Rethink Alternative Provision

In the last year alone, the number of pupils in the UK being educated away from mainstream schools has risen by over 20 percent and now stands at more than 15,000.

Alongside a persistent and severe rise in school absence and the need to provide increasing levels of specialist support for well-being, mental health and behavioural issues, the challenge for Headteachers and Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Leads continues to grow.

In the North East, The BUSY Group and Sporting Wallsend (part of the world-famous Wallsend Boys Club) are launching a new alternative education pathway that is designed to meet this challenge head-on — with small group delivery, trauma-informed mentoring and support, vocational qualifications and an integrated model of health and well-being.

We’re now actively talking about our vision for alternative education with stakeholders across the region including:

  • SEND Leads
  • Head Teachers
  • Local Authority Inclusion Teams
  • Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) Referrers and Decision-Makers

Our September start offers places for students in Key Stage 4 for two days a week. The programme is designed to help young people re-engage with learning, build skills and prepare for their future, academically, socially and emotionally. It is supported by two trusted local delivery partners (Family Gateway and Power Through Sport) and by therapists who will provide wraparound health and wellbeing support for our learners.

We know the need is great, but so are our ambitions to transform young people’s lives, help them build futures for themselves and develop a community hub to support parents and carers.

The BUSY Group believe that our innovative partnership, and the alternative education model we are building alongside the foundations of Wallsend’s century-strong community credentials, has something significantly different to offer.

If you’re exploring options for students who are currently at risk of exclusion, or you are looking to explore new partnership models in your area, we want to hear from you – or join us on the 16th September to learn more (info below). Let’s build something better — together.
